Colmar comes first, because that is where you start. The punts on the canal and the painted houses doubled in still water are Little Venice, a few steps from the Rue Turenne kerb. Then the villages. Riquewihr's Dolder tower stands over a red house front. A fountain is ringed with geraniums, and a lane corner hides under a flowering creeper. One street hangs a painted Christmas-tree sign, a reminder that December is a different season to book.

Next comes the vineyard itself. Hunawihr's fortified church stands on its rise above the vines. The same slopes turn gold in autumn, and fruit trees flower between young vines in spring. You will see grapes on the vine and pickers bent over their buckets. The castle keep is Haut-Kœnigsbourg, the one paid gate any tour here carries.
