Five walled wine villages sit within 14 km of Little Venice as the crow flies, and every Alsace wine route tour from Colmar spends its time in two or more of them. Here is how far each one is, which tours stop there and for how long, and what you will find when you get out of the van.

The times below are the listings' own. Where a listing names a village in its overview but not on its stop list, we say so, because a village named in passing may be a view from the road. Eguisheim, the closest village to Colmar

Eguisheim is 5.3 km from the Rue Turenne kerb in a straight line, the nearest of the villages the tours reach. Its streets run in rings rather than out from a square, and Les Plus Beaux Villages de France describes its concentric layout and half-timbered houses. At the centre stands the chapel of the Château Saint-Léon, which holds the relics of Pope Leo IX, born here, under a painted vault of seven scenes from his life. The 4 Wonders private listing calls the village his birthplace too.

The grand cru trail starts between the campsite and the stork park, so you can walk into the vines from the village edge if your stop is long enough. With an hour on the private day or the Basel day, you can walk one ring and sit down for a coffee. With the private three hours' 40 minutes, pick the chapel or the rings, not both.

Riquewihr, the village on the most stop lists

Riquewihr is 11.1 km from Rue Turenne as the crow flies, and more tours stop here than anywhere else on the route. The ICONICS half day gives it an hour, the 4 Wonders private day two hours, and the Emblematic 70 minutes with the Dolder Tower included. Les Plus Beaux Villages de France calls it the jewel of the Alsatian vineyards.

The Dolder is the 13th-century gate tower, now a museum of the fortified town, and it ends on a view over the roofs. The Tour des Voleurs nearby was the village prison, and the same visit takes in a 16th-century winegrower's house. The 4 Wonders private listing describes narrow cobblestone streets and fortified walls, so wear shoes with a grip. If your stop is long, the grand cru wine trail starts on Rue de la Piscine beside the Auberge du Schoenenbourg. In summer a winegrower sometimes leads it, and a free tasting follows. On a half day you will not fit it in; on the 4 Wonders private day's two hours, you can.

Kaysersberg, the Favourite Village of 2017

Kaysersberg is 10.1 km from Rue Turenne in a straight line, in its own valley west of the plain. The Kaysersberg valley tourist office records that it was voted Favourite Village of the French in 2017. The 4 Wonders private listing explains the name: Kaysersberg means "Emperor's Mountain" in German, after its ties to the Holy Roman Empire.

The Ophorus villages half day starts here with a guided walk and some free time. The private three-hour car stops for 40 minutes, the 4 Wonders private for an hour. If you want the Christmas market, note it opens on weekends only: plan a Friday to Sunday, not a Tuesday.

Ribeauvillé, three and a half kilometres from Riquewihr

Ribeauvillé is the furthest of the five from Colmar, 13.6 km as the crow flies, and only 3.6 km from Riquewihr. That short hop is why the tours that stop here pair the two. The Emblematic gives Ribeauvillé 70 minutes, the day from Basel an hour, and the 4 Wonders private day 45 minutes in the old centre.

Hunawihr, the fortified church in the vines

Hunawihr is 12.3 km from Rue Turenne and 2.1 km from Riquewihr, and it is the first stop on both Alsace Safari days. The ICONICS half day gives it 30 minutes; the Emblematic gives it 45, for the fountain and the fortified church. Les Plus Beaux Villages de France describes a 360-degree panorama of vineyards around it.

Below the village, NaturOparC is a five-hectare wildlife park on old marshland. It began as a stork reintroduction centre and now also keeps otters, great cormorants and the European hamster. No tour here stops at it, but reviewers on several days mention the stork nests on the village spires, so look up as you walk.

Kientzheim, on the Basel day

Kientzheim is 8.7 km from Rue Turenne as the crow flies and sits just east of Kaysersberg, in the same valley. The Kaysersberg valley tourist office lists it among its villages. One tour stops here: the private day from Basel, which gives it an hour on the stop list, after Eguisheim, Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé.

That listing is the one to read closely. It picks you up in Basel, Colmar or Breisach, and its overview allows wineries "in the Alsace or Baden-Württemberg regions", so ask your guide which side of the Rhine the tastings will be on if you want to stay in Alsace.

The Ophorus wine days, half and full, list the wine route itself rather than villages: their stops are wineries, and the guide picks them. The ICONICS and Emblematic overviews also name Eguisheim, and the Emblematic names Kaysersberg, but neither village is on their stop lists.
