Why does a half day cost $87 or $114?

Because one pours and the other does not. The Ophorus villages half day at $87 takes you to Kaysersberg and Riquewihr with a guide, and lists tasting fees among its exclusions. The Ophorus half-day wine tour at $114 takes you to two family wineries, with two tastings in the fare.

Which fares include the tasting?

Most of them. The tasting is inside the fare on the ICONICS half day, the Emblematic, the Ophorus half-day and full-day wine tours, the private 4 Wonders day, the Basel day and Domaine Gueth.

Three leave it out. The Ophorus villages half day excludes tasting fees. The 4 Wonders small group stops at a wine cave where you pay for what you taste. The CTravel run names no tasting at all. No official source publishes what a tasting at the cave costs, so we do not guess at one.

Per person or per car?

Two fares are per car, and the rest per person. The private 4 Wonders day is $790 for up to eight. The CTravel run is $409 for up to four. Whether one of you rides or the car is full, the fare is the same.

The Basel day looks like it belongs with them, since it is sold as private. It is priced per person, at $341 a head, for groups of two or more.

What does a private car cost a head?

It depends on who fills it, and that is your calculation to make. A full car is the cheapest a private day gets. The fewer of you there are, the more the car costs each of you.

Lunch: nobody feeds you

No fare includes lunch. The full days stop somewhere you can buy it, and the Alsace Safari vans do not allow food on board. Budget for a meal in a village winstub on every full day, and eat before a half day.

Domaine Gueth serves a pretzel and a few crackers with its seven wines. That is the only food in any fare here.

What does Haut-Kœnigsbourg add?

Nothing, unless you book the Emblematic. Haut-Kœnigsbourg is the red sandstone castle above Orschwiller, north of the wine villages. The Emblematic's fare of $193 includes its entry, on the days its visitor numbers allow the stop. On every other tour, the castle is not on the route.

Bought at the gate, an adult ticket is €12, €16 with the audio tour, and €8 for ages 6 to 17. A family ticket for up to four, with no more than two adults, is €30. Under-sixes go free.

Are tips expected?

They are not in the fare. The Ophorus listings name gratuities among their exclusions, and no listing states an amount. Tipping your driver-guide is your choice.

If you do tip, cash at the end of the day is the simplest way to do it.

What does a family or a solo traveller pay?

A family pays per seat on the shared days, and children count as seats. The Ophorus half-day and full-day wine tours are closed to under-18s, so a family day there is not an option. The private 4 Wonders car is one fare for up to eight, which is where a larger family comes out ahead.

A solo traveller pays one per-person fare, but not every day will take you. The Emblematic, the 4 Wonders small group and the Basel day need two per booking. The Ophorus days take a single booking, yet need two adults to run, so you may be moved to another date or refunded. Domaine Gueth, at $19, is the one fare with no such catch. Is the cheapest tour the worst?

No, but it is a different product. The Ophorus villages half day at $87 is rated 4.8 from 193 reviews, and travellers who booked it for the villages were happy. It is a guided walk through Kaysersberg and Riquewihr with a qualified driver-guide, eight seats at most, and a 9:00am or 2:00pm slot.

What it is not is a wine tour. If you book it expecting a tasting, you pay the cellar on top, or you go home without one. Read the tasting column of the table above before you book any fare.

When should you book, and what if plans change?

Book as soon as your date is fixed. Every fare refunds in full up to 24 hours before the start, so an early booking costs you nothing if plans change. Vans take seven or eight, and the summer and Christmas weeks fill first.

Two clauses are worth knowing. Most operators can cancel if too few people book, and you are then offered another date or a full refund. The 4 Wonders small group can take up to 48 hours to confirm your booking, so do not leave it to the day before.

What is a fair price by format?

Judge a fare by what it pours and how far it takes you, not by its size. A half day with a tasting, at $111 or $114, is fair. A full day with three tastings at $187 gives the most wine for the money.
