Eight hours and three tastings

What three winery tastings means

You stop at three wineries in three different villages. At each one, somebody walks you round and pours. All three tastings are in the fare. Travellers describe owners and winemakers doing the pouring, and a guide who fills in the rest between cellars.

Three cellars is the point. You taste the same grapes made three different ways, and by the third you know what you like. Alsace is mostly white wine, so expect Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer among what you are poured. Want the background before you go? Not every cellar lands the same way. One traveller this September found the first winery excellent and the second flat, with little said about the wines. That is the honest risk of a day built on family estates: the people change with the season.

Adults only, and the minimum of two

Nobody under 18 can travel on this day. That is the operator's rule, and it follows from a day built round three tastings. If you have children with you, see who should book something else below.

You can book a single seat. The day still needs two adults booked before it runs. If the minimum is not met, the operator offers you another date or a full refund. One couple who were the only booking on their date got the whole day to themselves.

Lunch is yours to buy

Lunch is not in the fare. The guide stops in one village long enough for you to eat and wander; travellers name Eguisheim as that stop on their day. The villages change, so do not book on it.

Eat a proper breakfast. The operator warns that in France snacks do not come with a tasting, so you taste three times with nothing but what you ate before 9:30am.

How your eight hours run

1. 9:20am, the CGR cinema. You arrive ten minutes early at 1 Place Scheurer-Kestner.
2. 9:30am, out onto the route. The minivan leaves Colmar for the vineyard.
3. The first winery. A cellar visit and the first tasting, in the fare.
4. The second winery. A different village, a different family, a second tasting.
5. Lunch in a village. Your own time to eat and walk; lunch is paid by you.
6. The third winery. The last tasting of the day, still in the fare.
7. About 5:30pm, back at the CGR cinema. Eight hours after you left.

The CGR cinema kerb at 9:30am

You meet in front of the CGR cinema at 1 Place Scheurer-Kestner, ten minutes before the 9:30am departure. The day ends back at the same kerb.

Be on time. One traveller arrived four minutes late and found the minivan gone. There is no hotel pickup, so walk it or take a taxi. The cinema is 919 m north of the Rue Turenne kerb in Little Venice, and every departure point is marked on the map. The visitor guide has the rest of the kerbs and their start times.

Know before you go

• Adults only, 18 and over. Children cannot come at all, even with a parent.
• Eat a real breakfast. No snacks come with the tastings, by design.
• Be at the cinema by 9:20am. The minivan leaves at 9:30am and does not wait.
• Two adults make it run. Book alone and you may be moved to another date or refunded.
• Tips are not included. Tipping your guide is up to you; bring cash if you plan to.
• Not wheelchair accessible. Pets are not allowed either.
